Artist Statement:
The core focus of my work surrounds the ideas of exploring glass and light. This is apparent in my passion for making neon artwork. I am captivated by the way the light from a neon tube illuminates the surface of other objects around it. When the added material of ceramic, glass, or acrylic is completely transformed by the neon tube illuminating them, I describe it as “light glaze.” This phenomenon is similar to applying glaze to a ceramic vessel to alter the object's color and surface from its original state. In the context of my work, the light from neon acts as the glaze. One material could not exist without the other which is demonstrated with how dissimilar the work can appear when not illuminated. I carefully and purposely select each neon color for how it will transform the other material and to help convey the mood of the piece. There is something so irreplaceable, attractive, fragile, and rebellious about neon lighting that draws the viewer into each piece.
