Artist Statement:
Madi O’Carroll is an Irish emerging theatre-maker with a focus on queer identity and experience. She is a graduate of the Gaiety School of Acting full time acting course 2013-2015. Madi is a collaborator as well as solo-performer. Most recently she worked on Game Theory’s MOOP which was nominated for Best Ensemble Award in Dublin Fringe Festival 2019 and listed as The Irish Times’ top 9 shows of the festival year. This piece was devised by the ensemble under the direction of Cathal McGuire. Madi is interested in the history and form of storytelling in relation to personal identity and community. In December 2019 she was travelled to Ways, a queer feminist artist residency in Hungary for research and development on a project exploring queer and national identity from the Irish perspective. This residency was supported by the receipt of Arts Council’s Travel & Training Award. Madi’s long-term creative ambitions include de-colonising how we consume mainstream theatre and exposing the elusive heteronormative structures in storytelling. Through this, Madi wishes to expose a glimpse of the freedom possible in a ‘queered’ society. Previous presentations of Madi’s work include Handing It, a dark comedy monologue detailing a day of revenge for a woman following her sexual assault. This was written and performed by Madi and presented at Scene & Heard 2017. In September 2018 Madi’s script HELP was one of six selected for development and presentation at The New Theatre’s New Writing Week. HELP was a two-hander detailing the subtle gendered power dynamics of therapy sessions between a young traumatised woman and her male counsellor. Madi regularly performs her own work at queer spaces including Avoca Reaction’s Big Durty Queer Cabaret and GLITTERHOLE at Jigsaw studios.
