Bio:

Karthika Murali (b.1997) grew up in Mumbai and did her pre- degree and initial Masters at Sophia College for Women in Political Science and English Literature in 2015. She received a bachelors’ degree (B. FA) in Contemporary Art Practices from Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, Bangalore in 2019. Karthika has been developing her work in alternative theatre and performance making as well as her interest into art as her career.  She practices both digital and handmade collages. She gathers inspiration mostly from mythology and 21st century social concepts and portrays them mainly through existing prints and images and relevant materials. Karthika currently lives and works in Mumbai.

Artist Statement:

Karthika Murali’s work marries literary/political/ social texts with 21st century scenarios to make a phantasmagorical image . Her image making process is based around laws of association and humor. 

I was very drawn to literary texts in the likes of Tarot, Greek mythology, Karl Marx etc. My process revolves around translating a theatrical scene based on such concepts and into images keeping in mind the elements of color, emotion, space and surrealism. Working with images that already exists in print and online helps create deeper layers of meaning making and juxtapositions for the audience thereby tapping into a set of data already accessed by  21st century beings.
