Artist Statement:

All of these pieces were made during self-isolation, either in my home studio or with photos I had already taken. I was inspired to delve deeper into glitch art out of a love for digital textures, but also a personal inquiry into the nature of human relationships to the digital realm. Though humans have been living digitally driven lives for years now, this state of being has been drastically exacerbated by recent self-isolation. We now live in a time where we fear the freedom of the outside world and often withdraw to the digital sphere for safety and solace. Many of us, myself included, have built digital narratives for ourselves, including online personas, names, friend circles, and lifestyles that do not accurately represent our physical existence. My exploration into glitch art is a direct result of trying to manifest what the space in between digital and physical identity looks like. The result is often messy and visceral, creating a new being through disruption and erasure. Every photo from the Digital Flesh and Where Do You End and I Begin? Series was once a photo of a model, placed into a glitch program with somewhat randomized corruption processes. Covid has deeply corrupted my way of life and this practice of relinquishing control to an internet based program is representative of my physical and psychological withdrawal into the cyber sphere. I hope that these pieces encourage you to question your digital identity, the culture we have built around an online existence, and what function control plays in these realms.
